Personal Loan Rejected? 9 Reasons Banks in Pakistan Say No and How to Fix Each

The real reasons Pakistani banks reject personal loan applications, from DBR and eCIB history to employer lists, and a practical fix for each one.

Getting a rejection call from the bank is frustrating, especially when nobody tells you why. Banks rarely explain their decision in detail. But the reason almost always falls into one of a handful of categories, and most of them can be fixed.

Here are the nine most common reasons, and what you can do about each one.

1. Your installments would take too much of your salary

This is the most common reason by far. Banks look at your debt burden ratio, which is the share of your monthly income going towards loan payments. For personal loans, plan on a limit of 40 percent, and that includes the loans you already have.

Here is an example. Someone earns Rs 120,000 a month and already pays Rs 25,000 for a car. They apply for a Rs 10 lakh personal loan over three years at 23 percent. The new installment would be Rs 38,710. Add the car and their total comes to 53 percent of their salary, well above the 40 percent limit of Rs 48,000. Rejected.

The fix: ask for a smaller amount or a longer term. In this example, a loan of about Rs 5.9 lakh over three years keeps them just inside the limit. Our Personal Loan Calculator shows your DBR as you type, so you can find the amount that fits before you apply.

2. Something in your credit history

Every bank checks your record with the State Bank’s credit bureau, known as eCIB. Late payments on a credit card, a loan you settled for less than you owed, or even a small mobile phone installment that was never cleared can all show up.

The fix: check your own report before you apply. You can request it from the State Bank of Pakistan, and private credit bureaus such as Tasdeeq and DataCheck also provide reports. If there is a mistake, raise it with the bank that reported it. If there is a real late payment, clearing it and keeping a clean record for several months makes a big difference.

3. Your employer is not on the bank’s list

Banks keep lists of employers they consider stable. Government departments, large companies and well known multinationals are usually on them. Smaller private companies often are not, and that can lead to a rejection even with a good salary.

The fix: apply at the bank where your salary account is. Banks are far more comfortable lending to someone whose salary they see arriving every month. You can also ask a bank directly whether your employer is on their approved list before applying.

4. You have not been in your job long enough

Many banks want to see at least six months to a year in your current job, and sometimes two years of total work experience.

The fix: if you have recently switched jobs, wait until you cross the bank’s minimum. Bring an employment letter that shows your joining date and your total experience, including your previous jobs.

5. Your salary is paid in cash

If your salary does not come into a bank account, the bank has no way to verify it, no matter what your salary slip says.

The fix: ask your employer to pay your salary into a bank account, and wait three to six months so the statement builds a record. This one change opens up almost every loan product.

6. Your age is outside the bank’s range

Most banks want applicants between about 21 and 60 years old, and the loan must end before you reach their upper age limit.

The fix: if you are close to the upper limit, a shorter term may be approved where a longer one was not.

7. Too many applications at the same time

Applying at four banks in the same week can look worrying to each of them, because every application is a sign that you are looking for credit.

The fix: work out your numbers first, pick the one or two banks that suit you best, and apply there. Do not scatter applications.

8. Your documents do not match

A name spelled differently on your CNIC and your salary slip, an old address, or an unsigned employment letter can hold up or sink an application.

The fix: check every document against your CNIC before you submit. Our loan documents checklist lists exactly what each type of applicant needs.

9. Your credit cards count against you

Even if you pay your cards in full every month, many banks count part of your total card limit as if it were a monthly payment. A couple of high limit cards can quietly reduce how much you can borrow.

The fix: close any card you do not use, or ask for a lower limit, a month or two before you apply.

Before you apply again

Wait a little while after a rejection instead of applying again the next day. Use that time to fix whichever reason applies to you. Then check your numbers with the Personal Loan Calculator so you know your installment and DBR fit comfortably inside the limit.

And remember, personal loans are among the most expensive kinds of borrowing, with rates above 20 percent a year. Borrow only what you need, and for the shortest term you can comfortably manage.

Bank policies differ and change over time. The examples in this article use indicative rates from September 2026 and are meant to help you understand the process, not to predict any bank’s decision.
