How the BOP Honda plan works
This is not a separate bike loan. It is an installment plan on your BOP credit card. You choose a Honda motorcycle, BOP pays Atlas Honda, and the price is split into equal monthly installments on your card. You need to be an existing BOP credit card holder with enough limit available for the full price of the bike.
On the 3 and 6 month plans there is no markup and no processing fee, so you pay exactly the bike's price spread over a few months. That is a genuinely good deal if you can manage the larger monthly amount. A CG 125 on the 6 month plan is Rs 39,750 a month.
What the longer plans really cost
BOP does not publish a markup rate for the 12 to 48 month plans, but the installment table makes it easy to work out. On every bike and every plan from 12 months up, the total you pay works out to the price plus 24% of the price for each year, give or take a rupee or two of rounding. A CD 70 at Rs 159,900 over 4 years costs 159,900 plus 96%, which is Rs 313,392. You pay Rs 153,492 extra for the same bike.
A flat 24% sounds lower than it is, because it is charged on the full price for the whole term even though you are paying it back every month. On a reducing balance, which is how banks quote car and personal loans, it works out to about 42% a year on the 12 month plan and about 38% a year on the 48 month plan. That is higher than most personal loans.
For comparison, our rate sheet lists bank bike financing at around 17.5% a year on a reducing balance, usually with a down payment and a processing fee. The calculator shows this side by side so you can see the difference in rupees.
Which plan should you choose?
If you can afford it, the 6 month plan is the best value by far, because you pay nothing extra. If the 6 month installment is too high, consider saving for a couple of months and paying a larger share up front, or choosing a cheaper model, rather than jumping to a 36 or 48 month plan.
If you do need a longer plan, the 12 or 18 month options keep the extra cost lower. Also compare a regular bank bike loan or an Islamic bike finance product, which can cost less over 2 to 3 years even after the processing fee. Our bike loan calculator compares the main options.
Keep your bike installment, plus any other card or loan payments, to about a quarter of your monthly income so that fuel, maintenance and the unexpected do not leave you short. With petrol near Rs 400 a litre, running costs add up quickly.
Before you sign up
- Check your BOP credit card limit covers the full price of the bike
- Confirm the current price with your Honda dealer, since prices change
- Ask BOP to confirm in writing whether any processing fee or FED applies to the longer plans
- Never miss a card payment, because late payment charges and card markup will add to the cost
Worked example
Here is a Honda CG 125 on the 24 month plan, compared with the 0% 6 month plan.
| 6 month plan | 24 month plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Bike price | Rs 238,500 | Rs 238,500 |
| Monthly installment | Rs 39,750 | Rs 14,707 |
| Total paid | Rs 238,500 | Rs 352,968 |
| Extra over the price | Rs 0 | Rs 114,468 |
| Real yearly rate | 0% | 40.9% |
The 24 month plan costs Rs 114,468 more for the same bike. Saving for a few months and choosing the 6 month plan avoids that cost completely.
