Highest and lowest petrol prices

  • Record high: Rs 458.41 a litre on 3 April 2026, when world oil prices jumped during the Middle East conflict. The price came down within days.
  • Lowest: Rs 74.52 a litre on 1 June 2020, during the COVID lockdowns when world oil demand collapsed.

The gap between those two dates is Rs 383.89 a litre, a sixfold swing in under six years.

What this means for your monthly fuel bill

A small car like a Suzuki Alto driving 40 km a day in the city uses about 67 litres a month. A Honda CD 70 riding 30 km a day uses about 16 litres.

Year (January price)Alto, about 67 litres a monthCD 70, about 16 litres a month
2018Rs 5,438Rs 1,337
2020Rs 7,777Rs 1,912
2022Rs 9,659Rs 2,375
2024Rs 17,832Rs 4,384
2026Rs 16,886Rs 4,152
October 2026Rs 25,481Rs 6,265

An Alto owner now spends about Rs 20,000 more every month on petrol than in 2018. Our true cost of owning a car guide adds insurance, tokens and maintenance on top.

Why petrol prices rose so much

  1. The rupee lost value. Pakistan imports almost all its oil and pays in dollars, so a weaker rupee raises the pump price even when world oil is steady.
  2. World oil prices. The 2022 Russia and Ukraine war and the 2026 Middle East conflict both pushed crude prices up sharply.
  3. Taxes and levies. The petroleum levy and, from 2025, a carbon levy of Rs 2.50 a litre are added to every litre (ProPakistani).
  4. A record import bill. Pakistan spent $16.86 billion on oil imports in the year to June 2026, $1.58 billion more than the IMF expected (ProPakistani).

Petrol against wages

In 2018 the minimum wage was Rs 15,000 a month, enough for about 184 litres of petrol. In 2026 the new minimum wage of Rs 40,700 buys about 107 litres at Rs 382. In other words, a minimum wage buys roughly 42% less petrol than it did in 2018 (minimum wage history; 2026 to 27 budget).

That is why so many families are moving from cars to motorcycles, and why motorcycle sales rose 27.4% in September 2026 while car sales fell.

How often does the petrol price change?

For years OGRA revised prices every 15 days. In October 2026 the price changed on several separate days within a single fortnight, with small rises and cuts (PakWheels). Check the rate bar at the top of our calculators for the latest figure.
