Inflation in Pakistan was 10.3% in September 2026 (Pakistan Bureau of Statistics). That number is the bar your savings must clear. If your money earns less than 10.3% after tax, it is quietly shrinking even while the balance goes up.
This guide compares the most common choices for ordinary savers, using rates published in October 2026.
First, two things to do before investing
- Keep an emergency fund of three months’ expenses in a place you can reach quickly.
- Clear expensive loans. A personal loan or credit card at 15% to 30% costs more than any safe investment earns. See should you pay off your loan early.
National Savings: the safest option most people have
National Savings schemes are backed by the Government of Pakistan. Rates from 1 October 2026:
| Scheme | Profit rate | Who can invest |
|---|---|---|
| Behbood Savings Certificates | 12.72% | People over 60, widows, disabled persons |
| Pensioners’ Benefit Account | 12.72% | Retired government pensioners |
| Defence Savings Certificates | 11.80% | Anyone, 10 year certificate |
| Regular Income Certificates | 11.76% | Anyone, monthly profit |
| Sarwa Islamic Term Account (5 years) | 11.70% | Anyone, Shariah compliant |
| Short Term Savings (12 months) | 11.31% | Anyone |

Remember the tax. Profit is taxed at source at 15% for filers and 30% for non filers. So Defence Savings at 11.80% gives a filer about 10.0% in hand and a non filer only about 8.3%. With inflation at 10.3%, a non filer is losing value. Getting on the FBR Active Taxpayers List is worth it.
Bank savings accounts
Easy to open and easy to withdraw, which makes them good for your emergency fund. Profit is usually lower than National Savings, and SBP’s minimum profit rule now covers individual accounts with an average balance of up to Rs 1 crore (Profit). Compare your bank’s published rate sheet before choosing.
Gold
Pakistanis trust gold, and it has protected value well when the rupee falls. On 20 October 2026, 24 karat gold was about Rs 4,35,436 per tola (Business Recorder). It pays no profit, prices swing every day, and jewellery loses making charges when you sell. Bars or coins from a trusted dealer are better as an investment than jewellery.
Mutual funds and the stock market
Money market funds are close to bank deposits in risk and often pay a little more. Equity funds invest in the Pakistan Stock Exchange and can earn much more over five years or longer, but they can also fall sharply in a bad year. Check any fund’s past returns on MUFAP and learn the basics on SECP’s Jamapunji before you invest. Only use money you will not need for at least five years.
Property
Property has made many families rich over time, but it needs a large amount at once, carries transfer taxes and fees, and can take months to sell. It is not suitable for an emergency fund. If you plan to buy a home with a loan, see our home loan calculator.
Committees (BC)
Committees are a good way to force yourself to save and they cost nothing. But they pay no profit, so with 10% inflation the money buys less by the time your turn comes.
A simple plan for most salaried people
- Emergency fund: bank savings account or Short Term Savings certificates
- Money you need in 1 to 3 years (wedding, car down payment): National Savings or Sarwa Islamic accounts
- Money for 5 years or more: a mix of National Savings, equity funds and some gold
Small amounts invested every month beat a big amount you never get round to. Treat your monthly saving like an installment you pay to yourself, on the same day every month.
